I’ll come and innovate at your place… with the Nomad’lab
ENSGSI

Multiplying the pathways to innovation has been the winning bet for the ENSGSI (Ecole nationale supérieure en génie des systèmes et de l’innovation) and the ERPI lab (research team on innovative processes), thanks to the Nomad’Lab, Lorraine’s Mobile Fab Lab! Since June 2014, investment by the Lorraine Regional Council and the Université de Lorraine, and with the funding of the first two years of operation by AGEFA PME and CGPME Lorraine (SME organisations), Lorraine has been the first region in France to acquire such a tool. An original concept, this mobile Fab Lab was born of the ambition to get as close as possible to companies and citizens to stimulate their creative and experimental capacity with 3D printers, 3D scanners, eye-tracking glasses… By erasing boundaries (whether geographic, temporal, economic, social or cultural), the Nomad’Lab reverses the initial relationship of access to technology and brings innovation right to the doorstep of companies, towns, schools… This proactive approach installs a new proximity with all users. A showcase and a real extension of the Lorraine Fab Living Lab®, this mobile science and technology system assists citizens and companies using it in a four-dimensional logic of creation: accelerating the passage from the idea (1D) to its conception (2D), its materialisation (3D: virtual or prototype) and its evaluation through use (4D).

Producing Hydrogen by Water Photolysis
École des mines - 6th june only

Producing Hydrogen by water photolysis is the Holy Grail of energy production. For indeed, this method has a near-zero ecological impact: all you need is water and sunlight. This green mode of production is a major issue for the energy future but the yield is still too low for it to be industrialised. What’s more, hydrogen has an average calorific value three times higher than that of oil, which thus makes it a fuel for the future. The problems involved are not only on the level of the production of dihydrogen: there are also the questions of retrieving it after dissociation from water and storing it. In this presentation, then, we will be looking into the different means available for producing hydrogen, we will present the theory concerning photolysis, and then we will examine the problems linked to the future of hydrogen (storage, applications, etc.). At the moment, we are in contact with researchers on the subject, who are helping us to create a photoelectric cell. Nevertheless, a photolytic cell is very difficult to make, and if we fail to make one, we will fall back on a solar panel linked to an electrolyser, which is much easier to assemble, and will fulfil a similar role during the exhibition.

Fossil Exhibition: from Research to Communication Tools
Andra, ADCPE, Université de Lorraine

Andra, the French National Radioactive Waste Agency, explains using several tools and productions (information boards, video animations …) how the “Fossiles, empreintes du temps” (Fossils, the Footprints of Time) exhibition was created. The exhibition was presented between 2010 and 2013 in the Meuse/Haute Marne underground research laboratory, and had over 10 thousand visitors. When the access shaft to Andra’s underground laboratory, situated 490 metres underground, was being dug, it cut through different layers of rock. Their description, the analysis of their minerals and the study of their fossils made it possible to specify their age and the environment in which they were formed. In bringing together all these studies, Andra and its scientific partners were thus able to reconstitute the geological history of the region over several hundred million years, and popularise this information and give it prominence by creating a richly illustrated interactive exhibition. This exhibition is the fruit of co-operations between Andra and the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) through the Forpro research group, and research work and doctoral theses at the G2R Laboratory of Nancy Université and the Biogéosciences laboratory at Université de Bourgogne.

The Prime Intimacy of our Being
La métonymie

A mirror reflects a human being in just the same way as MRI scans, X-rays or nuclear imaging can probe him or her. It is the in-depth image, a singular avatar of the person looking. If the person standing in front of this mirror moves towards it or away from it, s/he goes into or comes out of the IRM, X or nuclear body which reflects him/her. Alone, they discover an intimacy which has been hidden from them until this moment.

By Tom Giraud (LIMSI-CNRS), Matthieu Courgeon (Lab-STICC, University of South Brittany, European Center of Virtual Reality, Brest, France), Marion Tardieu (IR4M, CNRS – Univ Paris-Sud), Alexandra Roatis (INRIA, Univ Paris-Sud), Xavier Maître (IR4M, CNRS – Univ Paris-Sud).

Views of the humanities and social sciences in STAPS (Sports sciences)
Faculté du sport de Nancy - 4th and 5th june only

“[The body] is the emblem where culture inscribes its signs like so many coats of arms”. With his way with words, the historian Georges Vigarello, after others, underlines that culture leaves its mark on the body, in the body, integrated, to shape it, to socialise it. And so it is not surprising that in the field of STAPS (Science and Technique of Physical and Sports Activities), “man’s first tool” can bring together anthropologists, historians, sociologists… It is, for example, around the body that research crystallises: research into epilepsy and social exclusion, aquatic cultures and imaginings of immersion, or the cultural images that sports newspapers have always conveyed. As we can see, satellite notions such as handicap, sports, nature, culture, education, physical activities, excess, etc., gravitate around sport as an object of research. The stand devoted to the humanities and social sciences in STAPS at the Science & You Forum is an opportunity to come and discover some of this research, to get to know the methodological tools used, to discuss with researchers about their profession, or even better, their passion and – we hope – when you leave you will see these fields of investigation in a new light, with better knowledge.
