Science, A Laugh Story

A participatory exhibition. Humour is an important element in researchers’ daily lives: jokes pinned up on lab walls, cartoons slipped into slide shows, etc. Based on the principle of crowdsourcing, this exhibition does not begin with an opening ceremony, but with the launch of the construction project: bring your own jokes with you, or print them out on the spot, and stick them up alongside the researchers’ jokes. The attitudes and language used in relation to electricity since the end of the 19th century have often been tinged with awe and delight. France used the term of “fée électricité” (the electricity fairy – the miracle of electricity) and this term has stuck. But electrification has been a long, uneven process: recent in many countries, almost in its infancy in many regions… more than a billion human beings are still waiting for electric energy. Electric Worlds points up the different ways of speaking about, and the different choices made on, the marvels of electricity depending on the country and its history.

A Family Portrait: Martha, the bourgeois aunt, is wondering about her crystal glasses and her antique emerald. Are they fake? For their part, her geek nephew, her impish niece and their tilesetter father explore the properties of minerals, metals and proteins in their everyday life.

Drawing Inspiration from Science

This exhibition offers an approach to scientific research through an artistic representation of scientific data. It shows how the one can draw inspiration from the other and that artistic and scientific approaches share common characteristics. Constraints and creativity are at the heart of art and of science; in both cases, new ideas are to be generated and the good one(s) are to be selected. It is in their aims that they differ: when art calls into question and challenges the observer’s perception, science offers a rational and factual explanation. Based on the image and its interpretation, this exhibition questions the role and the limits of the eye in data analysis. By choosing scientific images taken with different types of microscopes, the authors also wish to explore the limits of the visible and thus examine the link between science and technology.

Discover the Géo-logiques expoMOBILE following three themes: the evolution of landscapes; Earth, the living planet; and underground resources. The expoMOBILE will deal with some broad geological notions such as plate tectonics, rock formation, fossilisation… and on themes centred more on the Lorraine region such as underground resources and the cuesta landscape. The aim is to understand the various geological phenomena which can be observed in your local environment or further afield, such as volcanism and earthquakes. You will be able to view through a microscope, actively search for fossils, and your curiosity will be aroused by playing on a highly original floor mat… This interactive expoMOBILE, suitable for ages 7 and over, will delight young and old!

When Magnetism meets NanoArt

This exhibition will introduce you to a new discipline at the meeting point between scientific imagery and abstract painting: NanoArt. Daniel Lacour, a researcher at the Institut Jean Lamour, will exhibit 12 “nanolandscapes” representing his work on magnetism and magnetisation. These colourful pictures are drawn from images from microscopy sessions or digital simulations which have been edited with image processing software.

Children – girls and boys from primary schools – used a drawing to answer the question: “What does being a scientist mean to you?” Out of the 1000 drawings collected, over 300 were brought together in a book called “Draw me a Scientist”, from which the display panels have been taken. Grouped by theme, the drawings have been commented on by different well-known figures. The analysis of these drawings is from an Educational Sciences thesis: “Les représentations des scientifiques chez les enfants, filles et garçons. Influence de la pratique des sciences à l’école primaire” (Representations of scientists by children, girls and boys. The influence of the practice of science in primary schools.)
